Project Updates

Time to update you on all the activities of the projects!

At the ICT Resource Centre in Malindi, the new location of the office is serving us very well. Jim, Amosh, and our new employee Gitau have been putting a lot of energy into new ideas and getting the concept of using computers to help the community out into the district.
We now have schools coming to study at the centre as a group as well as individual students and teachers from schools also coming to the centre for computer studies classes.

Last month we ran a very high profile Inter-Primary Schools debating competition. This involved 11 schools over a month period debating various issues relating to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) issues in the community. This helped involve not only the students but a lot of the community in ICT related issues and possible benefits of the technologies.

The team is also continuing in their commitment to the schools outreach program, where they visit schools without computers in the district and raise awareness of these technologies. When I go over in August I’ll be bringing 2 laptops which have been donated through PCs for Africa. These machines will help immensely in this work and other out-of-office programs.

PCs for Africa have just made some big changes in their operations. Having been collecting computers for the past few months and storing them in Enniskerry at a very helpful household, they have joined forces with Camara. Camara is another Irish based charity who collects computers from corporations in Ireland. This means that we have given all their collected donated machines to them, where they will be working on them at their Dublin warehouse and they will then send these computers out with their shipments to East Africa.
A group of us visit Camara regularly and help with the refurbishment of the machines, and in developing new and innovative ways to utilize these machines in Africa.

A shipment of these computers are heading to Kenya at the end of this month, and the PCs for Africa group on the Kenyan side (Voluntary Computer Group) are readying themselves and the schools to receive these machines.

It is my hope that in Malindi, using the ICT Resource Centre we can work towards building a solid link between all these different projects, and hopefully setup this office as a central hub for operations on the Kenyan side.
Of course these things are always dependant on people’s commitment, resources and MONEY!

My self and 2 volunteers are heading out to Malindi in August for a month to help at the centre and with PCs for Africa activities. We hope to bring money and ideas with us, so if you feel you could help with either or are interested in heading over yourself, please feel welcome to contact me.
I currently fund the running costs of the centre and the debating competitions which we hope to run at the beginning of each new school term and so donations have always been welcome.

Thanks again for your continuing support and interest in a few people’s work in trying to help a big world.
