Basketball Competition

Last weekend we hit the courts playing for "Digital Breeze, our Lindsay's Africa Project ICT Resource Centre team. The basketball tournament was organised by the centre to promote more sports in the community.

In conjunction with The Kenya Red Cross who are trying to curb drug abuse (a serious problem in Malindi) we are encouraging more sports games in the town. In the first of it kind in Malindi we ran a two day tournament at Barani Secondary School’s basketball court.

It was a great success, although there was some annoyance over a lack of trophy cup, but this was due to no communication amongst the teams and so they lost a sponsor. But this has proven to be a positive thing as now all the teams are taking their involvement seriously and already meetings have been held with the team officals to plan a better run next time.

Of course we gave the competition our all and in doing so got very sunburnt and worn out in the first day. But we showed good spirit!!

We’ll win next time for sure!

The photos below are of The Red Cross members who put on short sketches to highlight drug abuse issues during the course of the weekend's competition. This sort of medium is used a lot with the youth here to bring across a number of issues, combining participative games with community development outreach programs.
